French Polishing

French polishing is a wood finishing technique that results in a very high gloss surface, with a deep colour and chatoyancy. French polishing consists of applying many thin coats of shellac dissolved in denatured alcohol using a rubbing pad lubricated with one of a variety of oils. The rubbing pad is made of absorbent cotton or wool cloth wadding inside of a piece of fabric (usually soft cotton cloth) and is referred to as a fad, also called a rubber.

O'Briain Pianos provide French Polishing services. Our French Polisher completes this process both in your home and at his workshop. It involves stripping back the entire body surface of your piano using sand blocks, removing scratches, filling and repairing areas, before applying colour and several coats of shellac over a period of time. Certain panels are taken away to the workshop for refinement and by the end of the process your piano looks as good as new again. Some pianos take up to two weeks to complete, with usually two visits to your home.
